Default RAM Installation Problem

I recently purchased a gig of RAM (2x512MB) and my computer has two slots, it only works if one stick of RAM is in, if I put a second one in, it appears that my monitor doesn't respond, the light next to the power button on the monitor is orange. I know 512MB isn't my computer's max, 2gigs is, so why isn't this working? I'd appreciate help, please and thanks.

Umm...that told us nothing. What kind of processor do you have? Intel P4? Celeron? AMD 64 X2? Sempron? Now, what kind of motherboard do you have? An ASUS P4s800D? Gigabyte? Abit? ECS? I'm just going to assume that you bought that computer from Dell, Gateway or HP.

do they work individually because those sticks of ram should run together fine on a system with a P4

try each stick in there on its own

I've confirmed that both sticks of RAM work in my Dell. I'm almost certain it's the secondary DIMM slot, but I'm not sure why it's freaking.
