I got my Compaq for $680 and just got my $50 rebate in the mail today. Build one with a Sempron and the price should be in the $500 range. Oh, and that's $680, tax and shipping included.

**Edit**

Processor AMD Sempron(TM) 3200+ (1.8GHz / 256KB L2 cache)

Memory 512MB DDR-400MHz SDRAM (1x512)

Hard Drive 80GB 7200 rpm Ultra DMA Hard Drive

Primary CD/DVD Drive 48x max. CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive (48x32x16x48x)

Front Productivity Ports 2 USB 2.0, 1 Firewire, + Front Audio Ports

Graphics Card Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress HyperMemory

Monitor No Monitor

Sound Card Integrated 5.1 Capable Sound w/ Front Audio ports

Speakers No Speakers

Keyboard and Mouse Compaq Keyboard & Scroller Mouse

Productivity Software Microsoft(R) Works 8.0/Money 2006/MSN Encarta Plus

$499 not including $50 mail in rebate. So get something like this then purchase a decent video card from newegg.

Ah right, forgot about the tuner, but it's not like you couldn't add one. I added one I had laying around to my compaq(which actually was pulled from an HP )

The Sempron is just the cheaper processor from AMD. It's still a strong performer. I got one in my laptop, nice processor. I'd take it any day over Intel's Celeron!

As for those 2 machines you posted, I'm not a huge fan of either of those brands. However, if I had to pick one, I'd go with the emachines due to the RAM and slightly faster CPU.

And yes, if you capture something you can burn it to a DVD.

Are they really different in performance wise though? because im not going to upgrade the memory that much probably only to 2 gigs on either computer plus im on a really tight budget...lol

you said the emachine has a faster cpu but its only 2.2 ghz when the gateway is 2.4?

All in all, those machines are practically identical. if you're going to upgrade the RAM, I guess there's no real difference. I know the onboard video on the emachines is pretty bad, but I'm not sure how it is on the Gateway. I've never really done any research on that chipset...

Um... records show that the Athlon 64 3400 is only 2.2GHz...

I wouldn't recommend that tuner... It has no onboard compression and these off-brands tend to also have low quality.

Try this prebuilt from cyberpowerpc. It gets free shipping. You also get 5% instant cashback, just make sure you type in the promo code on checkout. If you dont like this one, check out their other ones. They are a decent price for what you get.
