Default TweakUI

I just upgraded to XP from 98SE. The TweakUI program for 98 had a section entitled "Paranoia" where one could choose to delete history of recently used files in explorer or visited places in IE. I don't see anything like that on TweakUI for XP. Is there something like this available?

you can get Webroot Window Washer, it is a great program, but it is a memory hog. it basically cleans all you temp files and ie cache and history. you can set it to run every time you close your browser, and it will run. you should probally have at least 512mb-1gb of ram for it to run in the backround all the time, as i said, it is a memory hog

If you have the original Tweakui for XP you may want to read the advice at:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui which adivises to remove it
for the updated version found at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

One additional note tp add: "PowerToys are for Windows XP only.

Important
• If you installed PowerToys prior to April 23, 2002, you must uninstall your old PowerToys before installing the versions available here.

• PowerToys only work with U.S. English regional settings."

I have the latest version of TweakUI, and since I just installed WinXP yesterday for the first time, there was no issue of uninstalling it first. It just doesn't do what I would like and what the Win98 version of TweakUI did.

If you launch TweakUI, and click the Explorer item, you'll see a checklist. One of them is to not save Recent Document history. If you want to not save your Recent History, right-click your IE desktop shortcut -> Properties -> General. You can clear the history there, or set it to zero days to save nothing. Above that, you'll find buttons to delete Cookies and Temporary Files. This is the closest I've been able to come to those Paranoia settings that you're talking about, and that I liked when I used Win95 with TweakUI. Best of luck, Roy.

Thanks, Tom. This is the closest to the old "Paranoia" settings on the original TweakUI.

If IE is your principal browser, you can even set it to automatically clear out the Temporary Files folder when you close it:
In IE: Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab -> scroll down to Security -> check the box marked "Empty Temporary Internet files folder when browser is closed" box. Click OK, then close IE.

For those of you interested, I just found the old copy of Windows98 TweakUI. I installed it on Windows XP. The settings are in the control panel area as they were on 98, and there is still the "paranoia" area. If you check the appropriate boxes, it works to clear those areas. I haven't changed any other settings, as I don't want to really screw up XP, but so far this has only had the effect I wanted.
