lexmark x-74 Print But Won't Scan

Hi I have just built my dad a new computer, amd 2600 basically same as one on my signature but mx-4400 graphics and 40gb hard drive, not the best but better than his old celeron. Anyway I built it up got it all running perfectly but when it comes to the all in one printer scanner i couldn't get it to scan or copy but will print. an X appears next to the programs icon and says it is not connected. The usb ports work for everything else. and Ive even added a usb 2.0 pci card but to no avail. Just wondering if anyone knew what could be wrong.
