Your board is properly detecting the controller but not the drive itself? Any controller card is run by loading drivers from a primary or host drive. Usually that is an internal drive set as the master or first boot device. For this you most likely need to boot the system by another means like a startup floppy or even a preprepared boot cd in order to see those loaded.
