Exclamation comp locks up when cd inserted

Hi guys,
i just got a new computer (sig), and transferred the "Asus DVD-ROM E616" and "Sony DVD-RW DRU-710A" optical drives from my old computer... (they are on the same IDE, with asus as master and sony as slave)
while i was ripping my cds (using the asus dvd-rom), everything was fine untill it locked up for some reason... i restarted the computer, and when it tried to boot i had all weird and wonderfull colours on my display... i shat myself! so i turned it off, waited a bit, and turned it on, and everything was fine.
ive narrowed the causes for this problem down to the dvd-rom... because when i insert a cd, and it tries to autoplay, it locks up - no response what-so-ever. whether it be a music cd, or FarCry dvd-rom, it locks up when it wants to autoplay. I haven't tried on the sony, i'm too scared that i'll damage something...
can anyone explain why?
thanks for your time,
Paul

You won't hurt the Sony putting FarCry into that drive to run it. Besides the problem with the Asus drive itself as a possible cause how are the jumpers on both drives set? Master and Slave or Cable Select? Sometimes if using master and slave setting the switch to cable select can correct things. On problem seen on a Sony DRU-530 dvd-r/rw drive here is reading off of cd-rs although it is supposed to be able to burn them. Yet dvds have no issues.

When initialy installing the Sony dvd writer along with another Sony cd writer the problem seen was similar where even slaving a cd writer to the hard drive saw cable select work out. If the Asus is found bad you could easily go with a Sony cd rom or Sony cd writer for even playing music. For playing dvds as well as writing to dvd-rs and dvd-rws use the Sony DRU-710A. Sony drives do
seem to be some of the most reliable while being particular on disk format.

are you positive it's a result of auto run? hold shift when you insert the cd to confirm it is. (this temporarily disables it)

Setting the jumpers to "Cable Select" is the thing to do.
