Installing Windows XP on the hard disk which has data on it

Hello!

I had recently my data recovered and I was stored on a new hard disk (80 Gb MAXTOR).
Is it possible to install Windows XP on the same hard disk or should I use the new disk as a slave disk and record the data on DVD-s. I would already have done that, but the problem is that I can't see the new disk as a slave (the BIOS sees it, but it is not visible in My Computer (I have Windows 98 on my primary master).
So, I would preferably install the operating system on my new hard disk, but I'm afraid that I will lose the data on it.
If anybody can help, please answer!

Your old drive is probably NTFS, so you won't be able to see it in Win98. BartPE is a bootable CD that you could look into. With the correct extensions, it SHOULD be able to boot from the disk and allow you to copy the files you want.

But, to answer your question, yes, it's possible. There's the recovery option, I've seen reloads when it loads XP over the old one, and I've seen it where someone had a few different OS's on the same HD. It should work fine from another folder...

Can I use the recovery option when I have only data files on my new hard disk (not a complete OS)?

No, but you could just install another copy of XP

OK, so I can install Windows XP on the existing partition without formatting it?

Yes you can. There should be an option to leave the drive as is without formatting.
