It's a close call between that and the X1900XTX, but what would give the 7900gtx the advantage in my book any day is the difference in noise levels with the coolers. Just have a look at these vids, it speaks volumes (excuse the pun ).

I listened to those videos before buying this card and I must say they are highly over exaggerated, something with the mic capture just isnt right. But you are right the XTX has a somewhat higher level of noise. But the fan never reaches top speed (like in the video) unless you manually set it to always operate at full speed. I have a 6800GT as well and believe it or not the XTX is less noisy when idle (which is whats important to me).

Interesting. Obviously I'd like to avoid tampering with the stock cooler on whatever card I get if possible to preserve the warranty (and I will be upgrading soon), but you would have thought for someone to go to the lengths to produce the videos, they would have made sure they were pretty accurate. Obviously they wanted to illustrate a point.

Yes the 7900GTX is the better option if the noise level is crucial. Replacing the cooler with a aftermarket one is an option ($30) but as the stock HSF also cools the 8 memory modules on the card Id rather avoid that.

The 7900GTX and x1900XTX are both excellent cards. The x1900XTX outperforms the 7900GTX in some tests, and vice versa.

Check out these tests: http://sg.vr-zone.com/?i=3335&s=12

Well I don't speak German....

I would still take the 7800/7900GTX over the x1800xtx or the x1900xtx because of the noise difference, which is huge.
