Hi, I just cracked my Dell Inspiron 5150, I have an extended waranty I believe (my dad bought it) and I was wondering, do you have any advice as to what I should do? Would me dropping it (only 1/2 a foot!) be covered in my waranty(I dont want to call my dad or dell until I know my plan as to what I should do)? Would it be better to lie and say it was stolen if its not covered or something of the like (I dont think I should probably do that, sounds risky)? Also, my computer will stay on (didnt at first)- should I not turn it on because the crack is on the inside of the screen and its just a little black line in one corner with a bit of black that has leaked out but doesnt seem to be doing anything anymore. Should I just buy a new monitor or is that incredibly expensive-and if not where should I buy one from? I just need someone to walk me through this! Thanks, any suggestions are incredibly helpful!!!

It is my understanding that extended warranties only cover the actual manufacturing of the laptop and normal wear and tear, and damage inflicted by the purchaser isn't covered.
You certainly shouldn't lie about having it stolen. Not only will they enquire why you managed to get it back, they may insist in having a crime report number to go with it, and still wouldn't nessecarily be covered in the extended warranty. Buying a new screen is a possibility, although you'd need to contact Dell as it's a specialist part that may require the laptop to be sent away for repair, and may cost a lot of money. Laptops are tricky things when they break, and they're not cheap to repair, I'm sorry I can't be more help, perhaps someone has a brainwave as I'm sure the situation differs from country to country. |

The only thing i can say is that it costs alot to repair laptop screens. It costs around $400 for our school to fix the screen when they break.

I hear lots of people using ebay for similar stuff. Back when I had my PDA and participated on a forum about it, there was almost a post every day about replacing the LCD and getting them off ebay...
