Default disabling automatic update shield

hello, i'm new to all of this, my friend just taught me how to get on a discussion board. I'm trying to disable the yellow shield in the task bar which repeatedly prompts me to "update my settings." Is there a way to delete or disable this icon/program? I have Windows XP Pro.

one thing you can which I would sugest is do the update, you can turn it off by going to the control panel then automatic updates and go from there
