All it adds is DDR2 support which wont give much improvement over the current configurations.

The AMD X2 3800+ AM2 will only cost ~$303.

As tweaker and others have said, the X2 3800+ would be the best for the money. But if you have an Intel system, the Pentium D 9xx would be the best.

AMD has to stop basing their processors off the K8 anymore. That design won't use the DDR2 RAM efficiently.

Which is partly the reason why in recent benchmarks, the AM2 doesnt show much improvement over current CPU's. But in the future maybe they'll upgrade it so it will use it more efficiently.

x2 3800 is good enough for future use,

but just put this in mind, about a half year from now, window vista might come out,

then you need like 1.5~2gb ram, and direx 10 support video card.

and of course dual core cpus like x2 3800. would be minimum requirement.. (for proper usage predicted)

Actually AMD is still using the K8 platform, which is exactly why DDR2 hasn't been improving performance much; AMD's memory controller loves low latencies.
