Default CDROM drive not recognised

Running Win XP - I am trying to install Paint Shop Pro 9, to replace PSP7. Just after installation starts, I get an error message "can't find E:\paint shop pro 9\data1.cab" (E: is my CD drive). The file is there on the CD. I tried uninstalling PSP7 and removing all references to it in REGEDIT, Still the same.
BUT - on the same computer, I swapped to another (dismountable) hard drive, also running XP. The software installs perfectly OK on this drive. How can this be?
