Default Can't "Hide Inactive Icons"

I'm having a rather unusual problem with my system tray. The "Hide Inactive Icons" option in the "Taskbar and System Menu Properties" message box doesn't work. I haven't had this problem before, and I have no idea what might have caused it. The box is checked off, but the little arrows to the left of the system tray have disappeared, and both the active and inactive items are in the system tray. Anyone have any idea whazzup?
Thanks!!

Open the properties menu for the taskbar. Then, next to the hide inactive icons option, click customise.

All of the icons that you see in your task bar will be displayed, and next to it, options. Here you can change the options from "always show", to "hide when inactive" etc by clicking on the behaviour next to the icon in question.

try changing some "always show" to "hide when inactive" - see if they "hide" for you.

Thanks cparsons ... I already checked that, though. The settings haven't changed from before I started having the problem. The problem seesm to be that the "Hide Inactive Icons" feature seems to be ... inactive!
