It's not a memory card lol... It looks like a small credit card with the gold chip on one side. SIM Cards are what tell your phone which network to connect to, which tariff to use, what your mobile phone number is, etc...
In England, SIM Cards are a necessity. You can't use a phone without one (well, you can, but you won't connect to a service provider).
