Need help. External HD does not show !

I am sure there is a simple explanation. I am using an external HD and have 2 mac computers. One desktop and the other a laptop. I have music files (pro tools) in my external HD. I also have music files on both my computers .

When I connect the external hd to my laptop, the hd icon shows up. But when I connect it to the desktop, there is no icon. Why is that ? It has always showed up there before. What can I do ? Or what am I doing wrong ?
