what database should i use ?

Hi
i'm going to write a programm in VB(net) + java. for a company.
i have to build a database for the whole stuff (accounting, transfer, shipping and so on). it should be a cheap solution and extendable.

i did the first step in excel + vba, that's what they asked me to do. now
after the prog runs well, i'm looking forward to create a full functional system.
i guess doing it in access meanwhile could work, but that's not the best.

would be nice if you have some tips for me
