When I asked a tech what the difference is between laser and optical mice he answered: "You... You could use the laser mouse on glass as well, and its only $85"
No big defference...

You really should use a mousepad of some sort, and not just your desk, since some tables use a semi-reflective coating, which can interfere with the optical sensor.

I had a laser mouse, and it didnt work well on glass or plexiglass. But it did work on a few more surfaces, as well as having a higher DPI and being more sensitive. They also dont light up as brightly as an optical mouse does.
