Default thinkpad laptop

I have an IBM thinkpad R40 with a Intel Pentium 4 2GHz processor and 512 mb ram. I wanted to know how to take some things off of the startup list because my computer takes a while to load completey. my desktop is loaded within 15 seconds while my laptop is about a minute or two.

to finish what he polo5 stated, after going to startup disable what you dont want to start when you boot up (ie. Messengers, Firewall). in fact i just got on my laptop a while ago and disable 15 things and it made a world of a difference in speed.
