Default waht cables do i need to connect a laptop and a pc together to play css together

my mate is comeing round to my house, and i want to play css against him, me on my laptop him on my desktop, i dont have the resources to play against each other on the internet, i want to play with the two computers connected to each other with a wire of some sort, the question is, what wire/s do i need?
where do i pug them in?
any software issues etc.?
anything else?

either a router/switch or hub with reg cat5 cables...

Or just a cross over cable. Plug them directly into the ethernet card.
