6800 GE - S.O.S please help me!

Yeah, he and I were tossing this idea back and forth ... thats *REALLY* odd ... perhaps it'd be worth an email to the ASUS folks to see if they've somehow locked out their temperature sensor from the nVidia drivers?

there might be another entry associated with the temperature sensor that I missed, I'll check when I get home. When adding these entries it isn't necessary to reboot because its only enabling driver options, they become active immediately. This is really weird because all nvidia drivers with geforce 6 support have the temperature section enabled.

Rest assured, my friend, that I have woken Asus up to my case. One specific angry email that I sent as a complaint on their support has gotten them to make some technician contact me. In addition to all the details I have provided this man named Kuo, I have also posed the question as to the lack of the "Temperature Settings" option in the 6800 tab.
This of course does not at all cancel all the help you guys could provide, for even though I am hoping that some good might come of that technician, I highly doubt that he would provide me with as much valuable information and pointers as this place already has.

I've just gotten home from a long day with some time on my hands, and I've finally managed reducing the size of the screenshots.

Following are descriptions of each image and why it was taken, except of course for the 6800 tab, which shows the lack of the Temperature Settings even after adding the registry Dword value.

Now I just hope my "total attachments" thing won't get in the way...

Okay, I've managed all attachements except Kuo-AFTER-overheat.JPG, which showed that the clock was back to normal (350mhz) and the temperature had dropped to 68celcius.

Pictures decriptions:
Idle (windows xp, 1024/768, 32bit colors, 100hz refresh rate):
Immediately upon turning on the computer, the GPU is at ~52 celcius, and the Fan at 3006 RPM, but the GPU temperature has been slowly rising while I read your mail, and is continuing to rise right now as I am writing. At exactly this moment it is: 57celcius and rising slowly. Based upon this last week, it will shortly reach ~62 celcius and stay there, and the fan RPM will nevertheless remain 3,006 throughout the whole process. (gpu is now 58celcius after writing this final sentence, and rising...) This picture is named Kuo-idle-61c.JPG

I have been working on my PC in Windows only for almost three hours and the GPU temperature is now ranging between 60celcius and 63 celcius.
I have a screenshot of the smartdoctor showing this temperature. The file is attached: Kuo-idle-61c.JPG

There it is: I have run the game (Beyond Good & Evil set at maximum graphics effects, no "blurring", no antialiasing, 1024/768, true color, 100hz refresh rate) for about ~4 minutes, which is relatively long(!), and I have got a screen capture of the overheating. (Smartdoctor is set to "Enable Overheat Protection", which may be the cause of the core clock speed reduced to 344mhz instead of 350mhz. Makes you wonder... what if this "overheat protection" option was off, and the clock would not have dropped: how high would the temperature have reached then?) This screen capture is the pic Kuo-overheat.jpg

Right now the core is back to 350mhz and the temperature is slowly dropping.

The Fan RPM, which is supposed to be at around 4,500 RPM in cases of such overheating, as Mr. Bruce Mao of Asus has said to me, has remained ~3,500 during the overheating screen. The screen capture I have taken does not show the Fan RPM because I thought it more important to show you the temperature.

Ok just to rule out software stupidity, *carefully* use your finger to stop the fan ... does the RPM indicator note the stoppage?

Okay, I am more than a little reluctant to physically touch the fan while it is working. Couldn't I damage it??

By the way I have just made these next little interesting experiments which might also help to rule out the software issue:

I have opened the computer case. The temperature started dropping.
Next thing, I plugged an external fan into the power next to the computer, turned it on, and pointed it into the case, specifically at the AGP slot carrying the card. The temperature started dropping, although not too-quickly (1 degree per 40 seconds, more or less).
Next, I tried running some 3D games for a while, while in this situation: case open, external fan working, pointed to the card. Then I would quickly shut the games down after a few minutes and look the the SmartDoctor temperatures. They were ~10-15 degrees lower than they were before.

Next I turned off the fan and played a game. The temperatures were slightly higher (~4 degrees).

As I proceeded to close the case and try the same thing, the temperatures were back to "normal", idling at the end of the games at ~62 celcius.

I also tried stopping the fan through the software, and this works just find. I can hear the fan stopping altogether, and the software (naturally) shows 0 RPM.

you wont damage it unless you touch the fins, then there is a chance you could hurt it, but if you touch the centre hub you'll be ok.

Have you tried getting the coolbits registry mod? That will enable everything supported by your card, OCing, additional opengl/directx settings, and a few others.

Crap I touched the fins on my fan a while back maybe thats why it stopped making loud noises

.Mauasatto I feel your pain I got a Geforce 6600 and I cant even find the stupid temperature settings either.
