Question pci card slots

I ran out of pci slots on my motherboard so how can I add another card. I heard there was an external device that you plug into the motherboard using a pci card and the device allows more pci card slots as well as other hardware slots. Has anyone heard of this device? If so what is it called, so I can order it?
