I have a Dell XP CD that came with the Dell I bought in 2001. It says on disk:
Operating System Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition This disk does not have SP1 or SP2. I have used it a couple of times to re-format and reinstall XP on the Dell. I'm right now putting together my first PC build. I'm using an ASUS mobo. Can I use this disk to install XP on the new comp? I will be trashing the Dell. Also, if I can use this disk, can I install SP2 after installing XP by doing the following: downloading the SP2 update from MS, burning the SP2 files to CD, and installing it as the first thing I do after installing XP. I thought I read here once that you souldn't connect to the internet until you have SP2 installed. Thx. |

Well firstly, i dont think you can use the Dell CD on any other computer.
Secondly, im on the net right now, have been all night, and i dont have any firewalls or anything, i dont have SP2, just SP1. Its only until i can sort out a problem with windows installl, but what im saying is that you should be fine to download SP2 only, i wouldnt suggest going on any ther sites though. Oh, and you dont need to burn it to cd, just run the .exe and let it install.

I downloaded the SP2 update and plan to save it at least on a burned disc, just in case I have to reinstall it at some time in the future. I have dialup and I wouldn't want to have to keep downloading the same thing over and over. And what if some day , M$ stops offering the SP2 installer? They stopped updating Win95, right?
You can't use a Dell install disc on anything but a Dell. The Dell installer looks for Dell BIOS strings. No compatible string = aborted installation. Tom

LOL I do have Win95 on my backup box for use when this one goes down. But you're right, they do have the old updates there. My mistake.

I would seem that they do not want you to share the disks with anyone...
