I recommend watching the video "The Guitar Chapter" by Michael Romeo on Google Video. It's about 45minutes though, so those who have Google Video Player, download it.

He might not look like you "average" guitar virtuoso but his playing is amazing.

I especially like the Sea of Lies solo, which is at 38:25 in the video. He has amazing tapping, legato and sweep picking skills.

Demonstration parts of the video

-Of Sins And Shadows 8:42
-The Damnation Game 12:55
-Out Of The Ashes 27:25
-Sea Of Lies 38:25

-Shawn Lane

-Jason Becker

-Marty Friedman

-Allan Holdsworth

I'm gonna go some day before Friday and test the Zoom GFX-1, might buy it for the money I get on my birthday. Birthday is on Friday!

I found some "instructions" on shredding.

-Tune down to DGCFAD for easier bending

-Set your guitars "action" low = set your strings as close to the fretboard as possible, just make sure it doesn't hit a fret when "idle".

-Use lubricant, like Fast Fret

-Scallop your frets

I have a small sweep excersize I came up with about 2-3 days ago. It's not too tricky but doing it fast might give you some problems.

For those who aren't too familiar with tab, the 1234 numbers on top of the tab are for fingering the pinky being 4, middle finger is 2 etc. The notes are 16th notes. You can play 'em as 16th note triplets, but I don't.

And if SAAER45 looks at this thread anymore, Dream Theater is a commercial band and John Petrucci is much better at shredding than Slash. Just listen to their song In The Name Of God, it includes some really fast alternate picking parts and arpeggios.

Just got a Zoom GFX-1, so far it's very good. Takes some time to master all the settings though. Just waiting for the expression pedal (Zoom FP02) to arrive so I can go pick it up. Damn it's fun to play with, now I just have to go and switch my current guitar and put in some extra cash to get a better one.
