Default Bizaar slow down of hardware

Hi... I have a quick question...

Recently, after having stupidly downloading malware onto my machine, I felt it necessary to reformat and reinstall XP.

For some reason, its taking FOREVER to install. (I have done this too many times to recall, and know approx. how long it takes.)

It seems to jump and skip as far as how "fast" its going. One process take 20 minutes, others a few seconds.

I ran a linux memtest, memory seems fine. (also pulled the ram physically and did each one individually)

Thought maybe it was a bum HDD, but ran a few tests on the one I thought was going, but it passed. Formatted, fdisked, etc. Same thing...

So, whats the problem? I've never had this issue with this mobo/processor before, and as far as I could tell, it all ran very smoothly until the malware incident. The processor isnt getting any hotter than usual, temps are about right.... The only REALLY different thing is that I threw in a few more cooling fans, (as I was adding another hdd, I thought I could use the extra cooling...)

Would a insufficient wattage on the power supply cause this? Seems to me it just wouldnt work at all if it was... I'll try pulling the fans...

Any suggestions?

Mobo : MSI pt-880
Intel 2.4
1 gig of ram, (333, DDR)
2 x 40 gig Hdd
1 x 60 gig Hdd
1 DVD-rw drive

Thanks in advance...

Default

check the transfer type of your hard drives... make sure it's not PIO
set it to UDMA
and no i dont think it's a power issue....
