Default When you listen to music, how do you listen to it?

Music is something that, in my opinion, can be enjoyed and analyzed on different levels.

You can listen to music..

-Poetically, where you pay attention to how the lyrics were written.

-Melodically, where you do nothing but listen to the rhythms, riffs, and other musical details of the music.

-Analytically, where you pay attention to the dynamics of the music, as well as other elements of how the music sounds such as presence of sibilance and the overall warmth and coloration of the music. This style of listening defines most audiophiles.

-Lyrically, where you listen for the message in the song.

Personally, I definitely listen to music analytically. When I buy a new CD, I don't buy it for the lyrical content, but instead for the overall production value. If a CD sounds bad, the rest of the CD is bad for me. Yes, having a CD that tells a story (such as Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory) is nice, but if it doesn't sound good, I'm not going to like the CD in general.

I'd be interested to know how some of you listen to your music...

I would be a mix of Analytically and Melodically.

Some times I find my self laying my head on my desk right next to my center speaker lisitening to the clariaty and flow of the song.

Pretty sad eh.

I would say I am:

I am really not positive though.

I guess im Analytically. i just sit in and listen to music and think about how deep bass from the music im listening can get and what they do to produce that bass.

I am these two right here i think although i am not really sure.

I just listen to how the song was composed and how comlicated that would be.

I would suggest you listen to Dream Theater's material, namely Scenes From A Memory. Track 9, entitled "The Dance of Eternity", incorporates some of the most complex time signatures I've EVER seen in a song. Although chaotic, it's amazing how everything blends together to create an enjoyable experience.
