Should i wait for DirectX 10?

Hi guys
i wanted to buy an ATI 1900XTX card but have heard they wont be compatible with directx 10 that’s soon to be released, i had few questions

•how big of a deal will directx 10 affect already existing cards, i mean there even no cards as i know of yet that are based on directx (not sure)

•will there be drivers or softwares that can fill the compatibility gap between directx 10 and existing video cards

•how long u guys think will take for a directx 10 compatible card to be made after diretx 10 comes out

•and finally is it worth waiting for it and when u guys think it will be released

Well, DirectX 10 is Vista only.

The thing is no matter what video card you buy its gonna be outdated really quickly. Most likely they would come out with new drivers and what not to make the gpus compatible with direct x 10 or else just about everyone would not be compatible with it, and as SC7 pointed out its vista only, but I'm sure there would be an update to allow the gpus to rune direct x 10 in vista, at least I think.....

Possibly certain DX 10 based apps, but i doubt it, the APIs are so radically different. This is bigger than 7 to 8 or 8 to 9.

What they mean is, you need Vista in order to use the DX10 capabilities of the cards.

DX9 GPU's would be allowed to run DirectX10 BUT, they would only emulate it....meaning it would be pretty much the same as DX9. So in the end, if your planning on playing Windows Vista Games (Which are exclusive to Vista) you should plan on getting a true DX10 gpu.

Exactly, well said P11. To Livizz, if you get the card, it may even run on as low as Windows 98SE, DirectX has little to do with what OS can run on it, just that DirectX 10 will be vista only, so you can only take full direct advantages of it's core technologies on Vista.

It wont run... and the emulation stuff isn't official, EA is just using it to simulate DX10 on Crysis.

There might be some sort of emulation, but it probably wont work too well.

There should be DX10 compatible cards before Vista is released. R600, and possibly G80 (ATi and nVidia's next gen GPU's) will support DX10.

Considering your current rig I would.

You might get the extra effects of DX10, but it would be running slower than DX9, and the main adavantage of DX10 is its performance increase, up to six times acording to Microsoft, although I doubt it will live up anywhere near that number.

So far the only Windows Vista Game thats exclusive is Halo 2. Crysis and UT 2007 will both run on XP.
