If you are not protectect by a router firewall, or a Os firewall... There are people that could do something. If you were running a mail server or an http server it could show with a simple port scan.
BUT an ip address shows where you are. Dial up you can control this to a point. If you dialed up into a local city or Chicago, it would give you an IP from that city. If you tracert an ip address it will show the general area the computer is.

Can dos tracert actually find the IP's location becuase i tried it on my ip address and it came out with:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1ms What does that mean....can i get my location. And just another quick question how do those internet sites automatically tell you your IP address? Is there a command to do that....like ping or something? |

http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation (an easier way)
A tracert tracks FROM your current location TO the location you specify. So in the dos window you need to type an address of someone other than yourself. Here is my local google server. (typed ping google.com, it shows the IP) 72.14.207.99 This is what I got...(minus my info) H:\>tracert 72.14.207.99 Tracing route to 72.14.207.99 over a maximum of 30 hops 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 2 44 ms 44 ms 44 ms xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 3 48 ms 45 ms 46 ms xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 4 40 ms 39 ms 39 ms xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 5 53 ms 49 ms 49 ms xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 6 48 ms 54 ms 49 ms xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 7 59 ms 59 ms 54 ms xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 8 60 ms 59 ms 59 ms ge-3-0-174.ipcolo2.Dallas1.Level3.net [63.210.14 4.153] 9 73 ms 69 ms 74 ms ae-32-54.ebr2.Dallas1.Level3.net [4.68.122.126] 10 * 69 ms 74 ms ae-1.ebr1.Dallas1.Level3.net [4.69.132.45] 11 114 ms * 110 ms ae-3.ebr1.Atlanta2.Level3.net [4.69.132.82] 12 100 ms 104 ms 109 ms ae-2.ebr1.Washington1.Level3.net [4.69.132.86] 13 109 ms 104 ms 114 ms ae-3.ebr1.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.69.132.90] 14 101 ms 99 ms 99 ms ae-11-53.car1.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.68.97.84] 15 97 ms 114 ms 99 ms 4.78.164.70 16 101 ms 104 ms 99 ms 72.14.236.215 17 112 ms 112 ms 114 ms 72.14.233.115 18 111 ms 114 ms 124 ms 66.249.94.92 19 111 ms 114 ms 124 ms 66.249.94.118 20 118 ms 114 ms 114 ms 72.14.207.99 Trace complete.
