Default 10 Gig hdd how big to make primary partition?

Hi,
I have never partitioned a hard drive, and am installing an 10 gig drive in a laptop.
I am going to make 2 drives, c&d

How big should I make the primary dos partition?

Will a bigger partition improve performance or have an advantage?

I am kinda rushed, I have the screen open and ready to go, so any quick advise would be appreciated

I am going to install win98 (old machine)

Thanks
Smokey

If this were me, I'd be asking what programs I'd be planning on using, how much space they'd take up, and in which partition the swapfile would go, in order to start to figure out how big to make the partitions.

Sorry ovenmaster, I am clueless with this.
Is the primary dos partition my C drive?

I was misunderstanding it to be like an operating system drive.

If primary is my C drive (boot) then I can figure the rest out.

Like I said rather clueless on this

Your primary DOS partition ("C") is where your OS will go, up to the max limit of say, just under 10 GB if you don't break it up into two partitions.
May I ask why you'd want to break up such a small drive? My own self personally? I'd not bother. 10GB is pretty small and easily managed.

It depends on what programs you are going to install and if you are going to install them on the default C drive. Its hard to say without knowing what else you are going to do with the compuer.

DOS only supports fat16 (the dos in win98 supports fat32) and partitions of up to 2 GB in size (probably different with Dos from win98).Also to create fat16 partitions with the win98 fdisk tool say no to enabling large disk support and to make fat32 say yes.
