I dont know if I would put rims on it or not. Rims cost money and there is always that chance of messing them up. If you could find some low-cost rims, which you wont care about curb rash or dirt then go for it.
I would probably put some of the money towards getting a tune up and maybe even putting some sort of stereo in it.
thats what i was thinking is there anything that i can get that will boost the performance of the engine and i was thinking of getting dual 12" kicker subs and a amp but i dont know what to do about speakers can somebody build a complete steroe system for about $1000 or perferably less. the subs and amp have to be good but the speakers just have to be deacent.

Performance wise, I'm not completely sure what there is for that type of car. More than likely there will not be a whole lot of bolt on performance parts for that model. But with a little research and asking, you might be surprised at what type of parts may be available.

If your totally into performance, then there is something's you could do like gut the whole thing out to lighten it up. (I don't think your dad would like that idea,). I guess you could also add some nitrous, maybe even possibly do a V-8 engine swap.
I'd probably look into buying a different car if you really want to get into the performance side of cars.

yeahh, it'd be 2 much work, a V-8 is obviously alot bigger, and you would have 2 weld up different motor mounts, lot of work.
