Assuming that the device you are playing the CD on isn't the problem, then I'm not sure what to do. I tried burning a CD with Windows Media Player and Nero and you are right. I doesn't do it.
I would say- Google "m4p converter" or "m3p encoder" and look for a free program that will change the file type so that other programs can copy it.
If you REALLY think that it is iTunes' fault, then just back-up your itunes music folder and re-install it. Maybe the software was bad?
