I would say- Google "m4p converter" or "m3p encoder" and look for a free program that will change the file type so that other programs can copy it.
If you REALLY think that it is iTunes' fault, then just back-up your itunes music folder and re-install it. Maybe the software was bad?

when you uninstall iTunes, it leaves the iTunes music folder right where it is, no need to back it up.
as for your little dilemma, you could burn an mp3 cd, and then just drag and drop them into a folder.
of course, that'd take a super long time... so my suggestion would be to find a converter.
i found a nice little instruction manual right here, written by a source ive never heard of, but it was the first hit on google for "m4p"
basically, try it. if you dont like it google m4p and see what it comes up with.
