Default Poor DVD Playback Quality

My problem is this: I put a DVD in my computer, let it work for a while, and, when Windows asks what I want done with the disk, I select "Play using Windows Media Player". It plays, but with very low quality: the frame rate is sub par (probably between 10 and 20 fps), and the sound (voices, music, etc.) stutters noticeably. I have noticed that when I play a given portion of the movie, then rewind and play the same part again, it plays in higher quality, but as soon as I reach a part I haven't viewed yet, it goes back to chopping and stuttering. Is there an easy, free way to fix this?

Thanks.

Video drivers? I would suggest updating them, even if its the problem or not.

I just upgraded to Windows Media Player 11 - is that what you mean by updating my drivers? If not, could you walk me through updating them?

Oh, those. I guess I never made the connection between video drivers and video card drivers. Sorry for the confusion. I have the latest ATI drivers downloaded (Catalyst Control Center, etc.).

Since video drivers aren't the problem, are there any other ideas?

FYI, there are no video drivers. There are codecs, which you could try and update. Try another player that uses it's own MPEG2 decoder(say PowerDVD)

Okay, I Googled PowerDVD, but all I could find for free were 30 day trials - I want something I can always rely on. Also, what is a trustworthy site to go to update my codecs?

EDIT: Never mind, I found a site to update my codecs, now everything works fine. Thanks for your suggestions.
