One immediate idea is to look in the Device Manager to see if you find any yellow exclaimation marks next to one or more items under the usb devices and controllers section there. What make and model board are you running? One Microsoft article regarding a lack of detection by Windows refers to 2000 as well as XP prior to having installed XP's service pack 2. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810090

You went back to a restore point on the calendar that proceeded WMP 11 beta to restore the WMP 10 version. How long was the WMP 11 on before you started seeing the problems with the usb ports? We are only at the beginning of July now where the restore calendar would be only a few days. It sounds like a bad install when you put the beta version on causing this.
