Dual core necessary for non gaming?

Im using the 30% off $999+ dollar coupon thing for a new dell laptop. I want true life, sound audigy, and a 9 cell battery. With these upgrades the price comes out to 800 for a dual core, and 765 for a solo. Is the 35 bucks worth it? I really didnt think I would notice a difference if I plan on only using the computer for college..maybe watching DVD's or playing old games like counter strike 1.6.

Its only 35 extra then yeah i would defo go for the dual core.

You certainly don't sound like you need it, but which spefic single and dual core CPU's are your choices? It might be better to get the single core depending on which two exactly they are.

hmm, you will be using your PC for everyday tasks yer ??

Well make it more future proof by paying the extra. Dual core CPU`s will be a PC standard soon enough.

If you do a search for AMD X2 and Intel conroe you`ll see the benefits off dual core cpus.

by the time dual cores become standered and needed for what hes doing hes going to want a new coimputer anyways, of coarse that doesn't mean its bad to get one now.

My best guess is that it's either like a 1.8Ghz Core Solo or a 1.66Ghz Core Duo.

I realize its 35 bucks for a pretty large jump in speed...but its still speed I will never use. I probably wouldnt even pay 10 bucks to get 1 gig of ram instead of 512.

By the way..will sound blaster audigy really be of use to me? I figured itd be good for DVD's and music.

I would actaully get the dual core just cause it will be faster. and i would get 1 gig over 512 youll notice a big difference in speed with that to. and the sound blaster audigy will be much better then the regular integrated dvds and music will be alot better sounding.
