About laoding xp on laptop

Hello i have been working on my laptop for a good 6 months after playing with it for a while i found out my hdd crashed so i bought a replacement hdd so when i got the hdd the first thing i did was format and partition. now my problem lays in geting xp to load which it wont. i had installed dos on there so my laptop would reconize my cdrw/dvd drive which i did and i could see what was on the disk when it was in the drive but then an error poped up saying that xp wont load in dos mode so my problem lays in a trap of which my cd drive cant be read without something on the hdd. what should i do to try to fix this i have been seeking help for a while and most everyone i talk to say it should load no problem or give me some way to do it and it dont work at all help me out please

You don't need to load DOS, set your CMOS to boot from your CD drive and boot from you XP CD... then you should be good to go

It dosent read the cd drive at all

is it an original or copy version of xp?
