It was originally started by 2 consortiums. Some like Pioneer invented the minus - media and some companies like Sony created plus +.

Most burners now are going dual-format, so they can burn DVD+R and DVD-R but originally there were ones that burned the specific formats. Of the two -R was the one to be officially favoured.

Here's an old article on it: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/110

Where do you live? (country ) Makes it easier to know, I only know UK-based media sites for example.

Well, I have found that the best in the UK is http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/ for prices. Another good one is http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/ but BDS is better IMHO

Well part of it has to do with the burning process .. +R is CAV (constant angular velocity) which means as time progresses, the burn speeds will just get faster, -R is CLV (constant linear velociyty) which means they will eventually run into a ceiling
