Hey guys.
As you all most likley know steam is what runs all the hl and hl2 etc games. Now i have the gold package for steam.(dod,dod:s,cs,cs:cz,cs:s,hl,hl:2,Hl:lc and many others) Now i love playing cs and dod and hl but recently my father installed a Linksys etherfast cable BEFSR41. We installed it and such to hook up a network between the 2 computers. Ever since i hooked it up i cannot play any games through steam, i can still join each game and start up dod and cs etc and join a server perfect.but then i get into a every server and after say..20 to 40 seconds maybe about a minute it gets almost really laggy and im brought back to the main menu without any messege (ie: banned, disconnected, timed out) I would really like to fix this problem, i almost have the money to start building my computer and i don't want to hook it up to the network i have going and not beable to play these games. Any ideas of what could be going on? Thanks guys |

It sounds like you are simply on a new router where your online steam account has to redetect the internet connection. Or the system now has file and printer sharing enabled and maybe even remote access with the machine. These things will pull things down a little at times but shouldn't cut you off a server. You may have to reinstall the game package there so that the game's installer includes the changes there when relogging onto the account. When I put the Collector's Edition back on here after a board and card swapout lately I can imagine some glitches there at first too.

What is the network hardware you are connecting to? (the router or switch...)

Well, there should be a little box that the two computers run off of. If you don't have one of these boxes, this is probably your problem...

It will also depend on whether or not there is a NIC card involved. That would be an addon card if not using the onboard Lan. The other way a cable connection to the router would be through the usb ports with some type of coverter there. The best way to know for sure just how things are setup would be to ask. The router should look like the one seen at http://reviews.cnet.com/Linksys_Ethe...7-1516994.html
