Default server on a home network

Can you guys suggest an affordable, descent server I could use on my home network. This would be the first time I have ever messed with a server, so it will be a learning experience. I have a linksys gigabit network. I would like to free up my PC that's hosting four seperate share drives, as it degrades PC performance when these are being accessed. It also degrades my network performance when I'm doing video editing or image processing.

any thoughts would be appreciated.
