My parents have a pc within a subnet that I need to access to do some remote work. I can get the public IP, but don't know how to connect to the private IP. Say I have public IP 254.124.123.122 and a private IP of 192.0.1.123. How would use these two pieces of info to connect to the 192 machine? I run XP pro and am familar with RDP.

The router which the computer is connected to (or switch) will have a way of forwarding ports. For Remote Desktop Connection it id 3389. Forward port 3389 to the local ip 192.0.1.123.
Or you could use the free version of www.logmein.com Very easy to use, setup... No port forwarding etc. Good luck
