Default wep key problem

i am running my laptop through a wirless router but the wireless router is in open connection at the moment so no problem connecting.
but i want to assign a wep incription key but i am unsure what is the actual key i need to put into the laptop to connect to the network.
is it the key that is generated by the router or is it the passphrase i type in to generate the keys bit confusing . Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance

1. Log into the route
2. Look for advanced/[security/encryption/etc]
3. Generate a key (write it down)
4. Control Panel --> My Network --> Wireless --> Advanced --> Enter in that funny key
5. Save the router settings

Default generate key

is this the key i make up myself or is this the key the router makes up after it has generated the key because it comes up with 4 keys after i have put in a word to generate.please advise me
i have put a word in the passphrase is it this word i have to match the laptop adapter to or is it 1 of the 4 keys the router comes up with i have tried both bot the laptop adapter will not log onto the network.maybe i should return back to factory settings and start again.

You enter in some word, say "CHICKEN" and that word is used to generate four keys as you've noticed. If you use the default settings than only the first key is actually needed for windows (you can change it so that it uses a different key but lets do one thing at time)

Usually its the first of the four keys .
