dells are alright. our family computer is a dell and it works great but the last one i bought for myself was a dud. Figured out it was bad ram after building a new computer and inserting the old ram in and it had the same symtoms. I know u said u dont want to build ur own but really its the best way to go.
If not then u can get a stock dell Dimension B110 for $299 celeron d 2.53ghz 256 ram (u can always increase it urself or add it on on the site before buying) 80gig HDD |

Dell Outlet. This site has newer pre-own Dells for cheaper than a brand new one.
