Default Dead PCMCIA slot?

I have a Belkin PCMCIA Wireless adapter that works fine in an older laptop I have (Toshiba Tecra 8100), but when I tried it in a newer HP Pavilion ze5170, the computer wouldn't recognize it... When I put it in the slot, nothing happened. In the Toshiba, it recognized the card as soon as I put it in. On the HP I tried installing the wireless drivers beforehand, no results. I was going to buy a different Wireless adapter to try, but before I do, I want to be sure that it isn't a dead PCMCIA slot, instead of being a problem with the wireless adapter. Any Ideas what I could be doing wrong, and how could I fix it? Also, how can I tell if the problem is a dead slot?

Thanks,
John

Trying a different card would be the only way I can think of.

either that or there is a conflict, i know when i installed xp on my dads sony viao it caused a conflict between something and one of the pc card slots so only the one works, check device manager and see if there is a conflict also plug in the card and then check in device manager to see if there is an unknown device.
