I don't know why I'm having such a difficult time understanding which cd drives do what.

Yes it will do everything for Dvd's and Cd's.

DVD-R (- is simply an older version of discs.)
DVD+R (+ is newer)
DVD-RW (rw= rewriteable, you can earase data, or add some)
DVD+R dl (dl= double layer. It simply has twice as much memory as normal ones)
DVD±R (± means - and +)
So here is a basic knowledge.

Ya that will do everything but dvd ram, but no one ever uses that so you are ok.
