I'm sure the drivers/software is out there somewhere... But if you honestly can't find it on google, you could just get a SmartMedia card reader and download your images that way.

hope you find a way... ive never connected any of my cams to the computer.. i have a 9 in 1 card reader and i find it VERY easy to transfer things QUICKLY so if you have some money at some point..its worth it

Card readers are the way to go, usally... They don't require any special software(but that was more of a problem with older cameras) and they are typcially faster as you said... But with old SmartMedia cards, they are sluggish anyway...
