Post DSL download speed problems...

I (think) I have the base SBC (AT&T) Yahoo! DSL package, which is 1.5 Mbps. I've had it for a couple years now, been on multiple computers, yet always had a download speed of 40~ KB/sec. My friend also has SBC Yahoo! DSL, I don't know what package but he gets 300 KB/sec+. We live close to eachother, and were downloading the same thing. Is 40 KB/sec normal for 1.5Mbps internet? I don't know much about net speeds.

edit: Wanted to add that I see no slowness of loading pages, and get great latency on games, so it's only my download speed that's slow...

Dsl speed is determined from many different thing. Most important Dsl is measured from the distance to the CO. He may be closer, which makes speeds faster. Dsl also runs over Copper telephone lines, which in places can be decades old. Depending on the condition of these lines speeds can increase or decrease. Also if you have a 3+ ft cord coming from the wall to the modem it can hinder speeds (the shorter the better). Also, if there are a lot of people in your neighborhood with DSL it can slow your line down aswell.

Since you always get abou 40kb download I will assume you have alwasy jad that, therefor I dont think it has anything to do with your computer itself...

Any other questions comments?

My friend is literally 1-2 miles away, I don't think that should lower my speed by 260kb/s. I know it's not a problem with my computer, just wondering if 40kb/s download speed is normal for 1.5Mbps DSL.

Your friend has the 3MB package I guarantee it and your line must be pretty far from the CO I bet you could not even get the 3MB package if you tried.

Try this and post your speed http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Yeah see there is your problem... Dsl need to be within either 6,000 or 8,000 ft (phone line distance) to the CO. 1 mile is 5,280ft (some companies claim up to 14200 feet for a signal... but it slows). He might even be at a different CO.

This is only true for a cable connection...dsl is a dedicated line and it goes right to the CO unlike cable that shares a NOD. All my neighbors have dsl and they can all be downloading movies and my speed is always the same.

Download Speed: 5006 kbps (625.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 632 kbps (79 KB/sec transfer rate)
