If you are pressing the safely remove hardware protocols, then you may be shutting down the card reader when you are stopping activity on the card. Make sure that you are selecting the card only on that menu, or you can try and make sure that all files accessed on the card are closed and that the activity light is off, and then just pull it out. Wouldn't necessarily recommend doing the second idea because you can damage the images if you don't do it correctly, but if you shut down the built-in card reader, you can't get it reactivated unless you restart the computer.
