I think the order of cruciality (word?) depends on what you'll be using it for. For basic use (office applications, internet, some light gaming, etc) my order would be CPU, GPU, HD, Connectivity. RAM is always upgradable and like mentioned, an external sound card is always available if you require that. Internet connections can be added via pcmcia and the hard drive can be upgraded fairly easily if need be; thats why those two were at the bottom of my list.

Mobile Laptop:
1. Battery
2. CPU
3. GPU

If you will be moving around a lot a powerful battery is a necessity.

Desktop Replacement
1. CPU
2. GPU
3. HDD

HDD can be upgraded but in a desktop replacment you will probably want a decent size hard drive to start off with.
