Default P4 3.8Ghz vs P4 3.46Ghz EE

I've read a few reviews of the new P4 3.8, but they don't really say if it is better than the fastest P4 EE.

Obviously, 3.8 is faster than 3.46, but does the Extreme Edition make a difference??

Or is the 3.8 better??

When you start dealing with those kinds chips (and prices), performance is all roughly the same and separating factors tend to focus on features like overclockability

That's kinda what I thought. The benchmark results favored the EE on games and the 3.8 on apps, but neither outpaced the other by that much, at least not anything someone besides a professional would notice.

Now I just gotta decide between one of these and the FX-55.

Well like i suggested before, when you get to those kinda price ranges, its not all thay much of a difference ... sure one might run faster here and there but really ... the differences are on a scale beyond the scope of most

Well, from reading this board you seem to be very well informed.

So, of the three which one would YOU choose??

None because they arent worth the price tag to me but to answer your question, probably the FX55 although the P4EE is a very nice contender ... i'm not a fan of prescotts and their massively long architecture

There is some nice work in the 3.8 to avoid overheating. The processor is really not the bottleneck though in a lot of pentiums - its the graphics card or the I/O.

Good article here: http://www.overclockers.com.au/article.php?id=331497
...which speaks volumes for the 925XE chipset.

But the gain in performance using the 3.46EE is very minimal over other high-end pentiums.

Here a benchmark comparing all the high end chips.

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/2004...m4_570-11.html

If you look through all the bench marks overall athlon fx-55 is the best cpu.

In video games you can buy some of the cheaper athlons 64 and still beat any pentium. example in unreal tournment 2004 1280X1024 32 bit color a athlon 64 3400 beats the p4 EE3.46.

In video decording the pentium 3.8ghz wins with the althon fx-55 close behind.

You can look at the rest your self.

my conclusion: video games one of the athlon 64 with out a doubt. professional stuff I would go with pentium 3.8ghz. Finally if you plan to do both I would go with athlon 64 fx-55 if you can afford it.

I've heard that the P4 EE is faster with general stuff like audio and regular applications than the FX-55. However, the FX-55 takes the cake and is way faster for games. So it, like it always does, depends on what you are going to be doing.
