i need help fixing a laptop

i know a samll amount about comp;uters and friend know nothing so he gave me his laptop to fix. when you turn it on it stays on for about three seconds, the monitor doesnt even turn on. it turns off and it doesnt even beep.

whats with it?
id like it alot if you where to ansewer and maybe help me fix it.

nvm battery was no good and would not let the laptop boot

I would guess that maybe
1. there is no ram in the notebook
2. the ram is bad
3. the port the ram is in is bad
4. both the ram and port is bad

... it is possible that someone might have removed the ram when the notebook was not all the way powered down.
What I usually do is take the main battery out and leave it out till the notebook is repaired. Do an orderly shut down from windows then pull the plug. In your case just pull the plug
There usually is 2 ram slots, if both are filled, take one ram stick out. try both slots. take the other stick and try both slots.
