Default Firewire and USB

Okay this may sound stupid but I have an external DVD burner and when I talked to someone about using either the USB or the Firewire connection, the guy mentioned something about not being able to use both the USB and the Firewire on my computer.

Now is that true? or can I use both on my computer, meaning I have my keyboard/mouse run off USB and have my burner run off Firewire.

if your dvd ext drive has usb and firewire connection's you can either use one or the other
if you got firewire and usb built in your mobo or you got a pci usb or firewire card you should be fine

Right now all I have is USB built in to the mobo, so I'd be looking to put in a Firewire PCI card. And yes, the DVD burner is capable of either Firewire or USB.
